Talbott Springs Elementary School
Newsletter - 4/4/25
Greetings TSES Families,
Next week is National Assistant Principals Week, and we will be celebrating our awesome TSES Assistant Principal, Dr. Lewis! We know that Dr. Lewis loves the Orioles, Ravens, and wearing a tie. We have a special spirit day scheduled for next Thursday, April 10, to “Dress Like Dr. Lewis Day”. Students and staff are invited to wear their Orioles gear, Ravens gear, or special tie for this spirit day. Please also consider sending Dr. Lewis an e-card or email (derek_lewis@hcpss.org) to thank him for his hard work and dedication. Dr. Lewis is always available for a high five, fist bump, and/or to join in on his favorite “Dr. Lewis!” chant. We appreciate Dr. Lewis for all that he does each and every day!
Speaking of Spirit Days… We would love to have a little fun during the week leading up to Spring Break. Check out our flier for our spirit days next week! We'll kick off spirit week with Twin Day on Monday, April 7!
Please join me in celebrating our talented TSES Students: Congratulations to 5th graders Zori S. and Laila R. on their performance with the Howard County Elementary School Honors Orchestra! This group is composed of two students from every elementary school in the county, and through careful selection, they were chosen to represent Talbott Springs. During their two weeks of rehearsing, they learned to create challenging and high-quality music with students from diverse backgrounds. Also congrats to our very own Strings Teacher Ms. Kim for co-directing the Middle School Honors Orchestra!
Lastly, our TSES garden, under the leadership of Mrs. Bailey has been highlighted by the Community Ecology Institute (CEI). Check out the article! Thank you to Mrs. Bailey for leading this effort and to CEI for their continued support.

Through a strong assessment system, stakeholders gain an understanding of how schools are performing and where assistance can be directed to support student growth and achievement.
The following dates dates have been scheduled for the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) testing at Talbott Springs:
5th Grade:
ELA: April 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th
Math: May 5th, 6th, 12th, and 13th
4th Grade:

3rd Grade:

Math: May 19th, 20th, 22nd, and 23rd
It is essential that students come to school on time on testing days, and we ask that you not schedule appointments or early dismissals on these days. Additionally, students should bring their charged Chromebook and power cord as well as wired headphones to use during ELA testing. Students should continue to bring all classroom materials.
Please contact Dr. Derek Lewis at 410-313-6915 with any questions.
As always, thank you for your support and flexibility!

Kindergarten Registration
We need your help in spreading the word regarding new Kindergarten registration for the 2025-2026 school year!
Registration for incoming kindergarteners and newly enrolled first graders opened on Monday, March 3. As we prepare for our upcoming school year, it is important to have your child registered to ensure we have the correct amount of teachers for our students. Please do not delay! Help us with the process by registering your new kindergartner or first grader as soon as possible.
Children must be 5 years old by 9/1/25 in order to enroll in kindergarten next school year. Every child who is 5 years old by this date must be enrolled in a kindergarten program this fall or have an approved waiver. HCPSS kindergarten is a full day program.
- Please make certain you are on the screen for 2025-2026 if registering for the next school year.
- Parents or guardians are to register students at the school serving the address where the child’s parent or guardian resides. Information on neighborhood schools can be found through HCPSS School Locator.
- Complete your child’s registration online by providing the documents listed below. The registration process will be more efficient if you upload the required documents during online registration. Otherwise, you will be asked to submit the required documents via email as pdfs, or you may contact the office to make arrangements to bring the documents in and we will copy them for you. The following documents are needed for registration and should be submitted during the online registration process:
- Child’s evidence of birth (i.e. birth certificate, baptismal certificate)
- An authorized record of immunizations
- Proof of residency in the form of your entire signed lease/deed including signature pages.
- Current utility bill with your name and address that has been issued within the last 45 days. (cellular device bills not accepted)
- Photo ID of parent/guardian
Additional Documents to bring if applicable to your child:
Proof of custody - only if there is information the school must adhere to during school hours (full document including the signature pages)
- Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for Special Education Services
- 504 plan
- Psychological report or related services reports/plans
- English Language Learner (ELL) plans or previous assessments
These forms should be completed by your child's pediatrician and dentist and emailed to our Health Room prior to the first day of school or as soon as your child has their 5 year check-up
It is recommended that you work on a laptop or desktop to complete registration. Cell phone registration is not recommended. Please call our front office at 410-313-6915 if you have questions and/or need support with the registration process.
