Art with a Heart

Exciting News! Starting in the New Year we will be creating a community mural in the outdoor garden area of Talbott Springs. We would like to welcome Art with a Heart and Matt Mitchell who will be partnering with us to assist in creating the mural. This mural has become possible through the PTA and a grant that we received from The Howard County Arts Council. Matt Mitchell has helped create many public murals in the Maryland area.

The theme of our mural is flowers. The mural will be made by assembling an assortment of colorful ceramic flowers that the students make. As Matt says, “Seeing a mural has the potential to bring a calming effect. Therefore, when a student or teacher or community member is having a rough day, simply seeing something beautiful and peaceful can have a positive effect on that person, impacting everyone that person comes in contact with that day, and everyone THEY come in contact with, etc., in a true chain reaction.”

On January 8, 9 and 10th Art with a Heart will be spending the morning with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders working in their art class to construct parts of personally unique flowers that will be assembled, becoming part of the mural. Every student in each grade will be contributing to the mural. Art teachers Erica Murray and Ann Valuntis will continue the ceramic flower making with Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes.

To date, students have been learning about murals. We have discussed the history, the importance, and the benefits that public art brings to a community. Community art can be viewed by anyone at any time. Even murals at schools can be viewed by the public as they walk or drive by or walk the school grounds after hours.

We are looking for volunteers to help with this large undertaking. The clay pieces will be fired in our school kiln. The pieces will be glazed and a second or third firing will take place. Please consider how you can contribute, more information will be coming in the new year. We will be needing help during the day to:

  • Load and unload the kiln

  • Organize parts of the flowers

  • roll slabs of clay

  • help younger students during class

  • to glaze

Any questions? Please contact Erica Murray or Ann Valuntis avaluntis@hcpss.org

through e-mail or leave a message with the front office staff.
