School Closing Information121810_100810_0.png
Emergency School Closings and Late Openings:
In the event that it is necessary for the Superintendent to close schools for a full day, delay the start of the school day, or close schools early due to inclement weather or other emergencies, announcements will be sent out to subscribers of the school systemís HCPSSNews email system or to go to the HCPSS website.  Parents may also call the new HCPSS Information Hotline at 410-313-6666 for a recorded message.  Notices will also be given through local radio and news stations.  Comcast Cable Channel 72 and Verizon Channel 42 post messages in English and Spanish.  The following are the messages that the school system puts out regarding changes to the school schedule due to inclement weather. Individual schools do not make decisions regarding school closings.
  • All Howard County Public Schools Closed means students do not attend school and all school-sponsored activities are canceled.
  • All Howard County Public Schools to Open 2 Hours Late means no morning Pre-Kindergarten, Afternoon Pre-Kindergarten will report at the regular time and students in all other grades report at 10:30 AM for school to start at 10:45. Please do not allow your child to be at the school earlier than 10:30 on late opening days. Staff are not available to supervise children prior to the start of school.  Columbia Association Before Care will open at 9:00 for students enrolled in this program.
  • Early Closing:  Students will be sent home via usual means of dismissal unless parents have provided the school with alternate plans for dismissal.  Please work with your child to assure that they understand alternate plans for early dismissal days. The best way to receive information regarding early closings is through HCPSSNews.
A more complete explanation of inclement weather policies for the Howard County Public School System is available at http://www.hcpss.org/news/weather.shtml You can register for HCPSS news at www.hcpssnews.com.
