Friday Newsletter~September 13, 2019

Talbott Springs Families,
Happy Friday September 13, 2019! This has been such a busy week at Talbott Springs Elementary! It didn’t take our staff and your children long to settle into a solid school routine.  Back to School Night for GT (Gifted and Talented Programming) and Grade 1 through 5 families takes place on Thursday September 19, 2019. Please join our school community to learn more about what is going on and how to access information about your child’s education. Your children really want you to see where they spend their days and they want you to meet their teachers!
I am grateful for the opportunity to see your children each day and appreciate the effort that you make each day on their behalf. Have a wonderful weekend.
Nancy Thompson

Green Apple Day of Service: Green Apple Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 9:00am-11:00 am.  Please join us for a fun day of cleaning up TSES and making it a better place for your students. Because “we learn here and where we learn matters.” All are welcome and the event is FREE. If possible, please bring a rake or shovel and a water bottle. We look forward to seeing you there!

Family File Reminder: Thank you to the MANY TSES families who have completed the Family File!! Family File needs to be updated every school year. HCPSS uses Family File for parents/guardians to complete emergency information. Parents/guardians must verify and/or update information for each child, and can do so by logging in to HCPSS Connect. TSES still does not have completed Family File information for several children! Having updated information for each child is very important. If you need additional assistance, please follow the instructions on HCPSS Connect or call Talbott Springs.

PARCC Reports: Student reports from the 2018 administration of the PARCC Assessment for current 4th and 5th grade students will be sent home in Friday Folders today. Please read the report and learn more about PARCC by reading information on the HCPSS website. In addition, feel free to contact nancy_thompson@hcpss.org  or Mariah_carr@hcpss.org with questions.

Free and Reduced Meal Application: Please note that this is critical information!
HCPSS participates in the Free and Reduced-price Meals (FARMs) program. Qualification is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential. Participation in FARMs qualifies students for a wide range of opportunities and resources beyond breakfast and lunch, including free college applications, free or reduced JumpStart tuition, discounted internet through the Comcast Internet Essentials program, and more. Families must submit a new application every school year. During the first 30 school days, students with FARMs eligibility from the prior school year will continue to receive benefits. Any student whose family has not filled out an application by the 30th school day will have their status changed to full pay until a new application is received. Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to fill out the applications as soon as possible. It is very important that applications are filled out accurately and completely. Apply online or Apply by mail: Paper applications are sent home with students on the first day of school. Paper applications can also be picked up in the Food and Nutrition Service Office (5451 Beaverkill Rd, Columbia, MD 21044). Applications can be returned to your child’s school or mailed to: HCPSS Food & Nutrition Service Office, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042. If you have questions regarding the program, please visit www.hcpss.org/FARMs or call Food and Nutrition Services at 410-313-6743.

From the TSES Physical Education Staff! We are excited to start a new year in Physical Education class, and we have so many exciting activities planned.  In order for your child to participate in these awesome activities they must be prepared with the proper footwear. Appropriate athletic and supportive footwear is needed. Students must wear an athletic shoe with a molded rubber sole. Sneakers must be tied with laces or secured by Velcro. Cross trainers, tennis, or court shoes are recommended for physical education activities. Sandals, cleats, Crocs, boots, flip flops, and shoes with no backing are not acceptable for physical education activities. Any student who does not have the appropriate footwear will not be allowed to participate in PE movement activities. We thank you for your continued support, and please let us know if you have any questions.  Ms. Parker and Mr. Watts

TSES Flu Vaccine Opportunity! Influenza, also known as the flu, is a serious illness that affects people of all ages. Last year was a bad flu season across our nation with many people becoming ill. One of the best ways to prevent the flu is through vaccinations. Once again, we will work with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention (MPP), the state’s immunization coalition, to offer flu vaccinations at TSES to students and teachers on October 21st of this year. Flu consents were sent home this week with your students and are due no later than September 21st.  You can also complete the consent online at https://immunizemaryland.org/school-clinic-consent-form
